The visible consequence is that the colours relate to each other the way mixed paint does — shifting toward and away from a light source — rather than occupying evenly spaced positions on a wheel. Whether that is better is a matter of taste; that it is different is the point.
One control that moves the whole palette
The interface is a palette and a lighting slider, and moving the slider reshapes every colour at once. That is a much better exploration model than adjusting swatches individually, because a palette is a relationship rather than a set of colours, and changing one member in isolation breaks the relationship.
